Don’t get me wrong – despite being on Korean soil, your chances of coming across Korean celebrities and idols are still slim. On second thought, you ~may~ have higher chances if you linger at hotspots in Gangnam or near their agencies but don’t take my word for it. I live across an idol agency and I still haven’t seen the maknae or the main singer from their boy group (any guesses who?) casually buying an Americano in the nearby cafe or just lurking in the GS25 across! LOL. So it is still quite shocking and totally random when you do actually bump into them, whoever they may be, giving you memories you won’t ever forget. Let me tell you about the times I ran into Taeyang of Bigbang, Yonghwa of CNBLUE, and Winner.
Where: Flight from Manila to Seoul
I took a Korean Air flight last March, and I already had an ~inkling~ that there would be idols on the same flight because there was a KPOP concert festival in Manila the night before. TBH, I was totally unconcerned by this and was more worried and nervous that I would be away my home for quite awhile. I mean, it was my first time living in a country alone. The whole time that I was waiting to board the plane, I literally was on-guard and cautious, thinking “this is it”. The last thing on my mind were idols. LOL.
After sitting around the gate, it was finally time to board. I handed my boarding pass for the flight attendant to check and heard the conversation she was having with another attendant:
*LOL @ my translations but hey, I might have foreign readers!*
Being chismosa and extremely curious, I wanted to know who they were talking about so I got on the plane full alert mode on.
As I was walking up to my seat, I stopped for a bit by first class because of congestion in the aisles. I looked around to amuse myself, watching people stow their luggages, when I made eye contact with the only guy already seated comfortably while everyone else around him was still busy settling down. At that time, I was texting my sister so I told her that the guy looked familiar, and kind of looks like CNBLUE’s Yonghwa. I wasn’t sure though because I had only seen him on Running Man and only knew a couple of their songs. She asked me to look again so I ~subtly~ did, only to have him looking at me again too……. AWKWARD.
At this point, we were both just awkwardly looking at each other (I described it as shifty eye contact in my tweet); me because I still couldn’t confirm if he was indeed Yonghwa, and him because I’m pretty sure that he thinks I’m (1) a fan who will ask for a photo/autograph, or (2) just crazy and weird (??). LOL. Hey, it’s not everyday I get to see an idol so what was I supposed to do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hilariously, my sister put her stalking skills to the test…
The conversation goes on with my sister nagging about how I should have gotten a photo with him… Honestly, even if it would be embarrassingly fan girl of me, I would have but I really couldn’t because he was seated near a different aisle from where I was standing, and he looked like he didn’t want to be recognized. (Note the “looking at me suspiciously” message). So I just made my way to my seat in peace.
After a 3-hour flight, we landed in Seoul. My jitters and excitement came back because I was ~finally~ in Seoul and there was absolutely no way to turn back now. I had to start being independent now. I smoothly made my way past immigration and moved on to get my baggages. While waiting, I had completely forgotten about Yonghwa when I see him across the baggage carousel.
So yeah, I subtly snapped a photo. He’s the guy in the orange hoodie and black mask:
The rest of the members were there too but because I only knew Yonghwa, I didn’t recognize them. I think he was talking to another member (the guy in the white hoodie) in the photo. (Could be one of the guys who starred in Cinderella and the Four Knights?)
After observing them from afar (not being a creep here, just passing the time lol), my baggages finally arrived.
Apparently, the whole time, I was standing beside AOA too because I saw a girl holding a luggage with their group name (could be their stylist), and she was with 5 other girls who had caps and masks on, as well as several guys. Not really sure if it was them, could’ve been their staff, but I’m certain they were also on the same flight because I heard two guys (probably CNBLUE’s managers) in the foreign exchange counter queue talking about AOA. Hahaha.
BTW! In my defense, I didn’t intentionally eavesdrop on them! Trust me, when you’re alone in a foreign country, you will tend to just observe and watch the people around you since you have no one to talk to anyway.
I’ll share my stories with Taeyang, Winner and another KPOP idol in my future posts but I want to know what you guys thought about this incident with Yonghwa. Was I a bit creepy or would you guys totally do the same thing (or more?) if you see an idol?? If you have random encounters with KPOP idols or celebrities, I’d love to hear them too!
